Description
Great collection of items from the United Steelworkers of America trade union. Part of a collection of exonumia from the estate of a Buffalo NY area collector.First is a group of (4) antique union convention watch fobs. The Steelworkers organized in May1942 and held their first convention that year. Conventions were held every two years, in May. This group consists of the 3rd - 6th conventions - they are marked as such along with the dates of the conventions, for the years 1946, 1948, 1950 and 1952.
Condition is overall excellent, with the 1946 and 1952 showing evidence of wear from a watch strap.
1946 was held in Atlantic City. I cannot make out the manufacturer on the reverse. Size is 1 3/8" plus the tab.
1948, in an unusual shape, was held in Boston. Made by Bastian Brothers, Rochester NY. Size is 1 1/4" at the widest part and 2" long.
1950 was held in Atlantic City. It features an interior insert (enamel/celluloid or some other material, I do not know - but it is a very cool piece) that honors the late Van Bittner (d. 1949), a driving force in the United Mine Workers union and the labor movement of the 1910s to 1940s, and the chief organizer of the workers at Bethlehem Steel. His efforts led to the establishment of the steelworkers union. Made by L. J. Limber Co, Chicago. Size is 1 1/2" round plus the tab.
1952 was held at Philadelphia. Made by Bastian Brothers, Rochester NY. Size is 1 3/8" round plus the tab.
These do not come along that often and it is rare to find this many all at once.
Second is a group of (3) vintage United Steelworkers belt buckles.
The first is I believe pewter. Measures approx. 2 3/8" x 3". Made expressly for District 37 by Koleaco Enterprises of Dallas. District 37 was based in Houston. I could not find out if and when Koleaco went out of business but they seem to have done most of their belt buckles in the mid to late 1970s, so I am guessing this one dates to around then. At any rate, it is no newer than 1995, when the union restructured and consolidated districts and #37 was abolished. It is difficult to see in the image, but above and below the 'Koleaco' badge is engraved the name 'Bob Henderson'. It appears to have been a homemade engraving. Otherwise in excellent condition with signs of light wear.
The second is also pewter, I believe. Measures 2 1/2" round, with a nice enameled union logo in the center. The reverse says it was designed and distributed by an Easton, PA I can find no information on, but production was likely done by a local metal products company. Guessing also circa 1970s to early 1980s. Shows light use.
Third is a steel and enamel oval buckle. Measures 2 1/2" x 3 3/4". This one shows more wear than the others, with two scratches visible on the black enamel field. Still in very good shape otherwise. No markings on the reverse.
