Brief History of the AFL Federal Labor Unions
In 1886 when the American Federation of Labor(AFL) was established, all of the unions were composed of Journeymen Tradesmen
of their various crafts. Following the establishment of the AFL, workers flocked to the union to become members. In most
cases, the existing Trade Unions would assert jurisdiction over the new members. But many of the workers could not be
assigned to any union since none of the existing International or National unions would assert jurisdiction. This caused the
AFL to issue a Federal Labor Union(FLU) charter for these members or risk their loss. All of the FLU'S are generally four or
    five digit numbered local unions.
Many of the FLUs were never placed in a National Union and continued to be serviced by the AFL. When the AFL-CIO merged on
December 5, 1955, all of the members were placed into other unions, primarily the CIO, and the chartering of FLUs was
discontinued. FLU items are rare today in collecting labor union memorabilia.
